11”x14” Archival Inkjet Print from original tintype on Canson Etching 100% Cotton Rag Matte Paper 310 gsm, signed by Clay McBride. Each print is in an edition of 300.
On May 24, 2024, in Canandaigua, NY, The Avett Brothers reunited with their old friend and renowned photographer Clay Patrick McBride for a unique portrait session. Using an old-fashioned view camera and the historic wet plate collodion technique from the 1850s, McBride crafted a series of breathtaking images that captured the band's essence with timeless artistry. This labor-intensive process, known for its rich history and distinctive characteristics, resulted in visually stunning and evocative portraits, imbued with a depth and presence unmatched by digital photography.
Clay Patrick McBride revitalizes the iconic wet plate collodion technique, famously romanticized in early Americana, to provide a fresh perspective on contemporary culture. This nostalgic process, one of the oldest photographic techniques, requires a high level of patience and involvement from both the artist and the subject, resulting in distinct, soulful images. Using a large format 4x5” camera to create positive images on thin pieces of tin, McBride captures unique characteristics such as rich contrast, detail, and the photographer's fingerprints on the edges.
